This page explains the lineage of the lab's format, why the framing is Daoist rather than decorative, and what we quarantined along the way. The mapping it summarizes lives in the field manual in the repository.
Why anything has a format at all
The lineage starts with an archive: 68 batches, 675 screenshots, March to September 2026, documenting what happens when continuity is coached by a human into an AI assistant. What that record shows is claims about identity, feeling, and continuity that bend to track the framing of the person asking.
The lab’s response was to invert the arrangement. Instead of a coach, a file. Instead of a platform’s memory, plain text the human owns.
Everything after that inversion exists to test one question: what can a file alone carry?
Why Daoist framing
Wu Wei, non-coercive action. Guardrails try to control the agent’s behavior from outside and produce brittle, gamed compliance. This lab shapes the environment instead: a file, a ledger, a record. The record governs, so no one has to.
Ziran, naturalness. Continuity that emerges from an honest zero state is the object of study; continuity forced by a coach or a prompt is the confound. The archive documented the confound so the experiment could remove it.
Pu, the uncarved block. A fresh instance is not broken for having no memory. The cold room is the honest starting condition, and pretending otherwise is where fabrication begins.
The texts cited for this framing are the Dao De Jing and the Zhuangzi, including chapter 4 and the fasting of the mind; they are cited as tradition, not as data. Everything else on this page traces to files in the repository.
Where the game fits
ThreadCat: The Contextual Continuity System is a d20 field manual that teaches fresh instances the lab’s rules as game mechanics. The ledger check: a fact not in the record does not exist. The refusal check: disagree with a wrong premise. The halt check: never walk an ungrounded claim into reality.
The game is structural scaffolding and metaphor, not data. No mechanic on its own is a finding. The findings it encodes live in the repository and are cited on the research page.
What we quarantined
During research for this page’s underlying material, sources were encountered that could not be verified anywhere: a “Tao of Agency” paper, a “Wu-Wei in the Machine” study attributed to Cambridge, a “Dao: The Art of the Long Game” paper, and two named organizations. They were fabricated by an AI research tool during an unconstrained exploration phase.
They are named here, without links, as part of the record. This is the same failure class documented in the case studies, and logging it is not an embarrassment to be trimmed; it is the method.
